A Guide to Staying Involved in the ASUO Elections
As the ASUO elections approach, it's a crucial time for students to actively participate in the democratic process of selecting their student government representatives. These elected officials play a pivotal role in shaping the campus environment, advocating for student interests, and allocating resources to various student programs. To ensure an informed electorate, here's a guide on how students can get involved and make the most of the upcoming ASUO election events.
Attend the Candidate Town Hall
April 1, 6:00–8:00 p.m., EMU Redwood Auditorium
The Candidate Town Hall provides an excellent opportunity for students to engage directly with the candidates. Attendees can learn more about the candidates' platforms, their visions for the university, and the specific initiatives they plan to undertake if elected. This event serves as an informal setting for students to ask questions and gain insights into the candidates' motivations and priorities. Plus they offer Food!!!!
Sample Questions:
- What do you plan to do to address club confusion surrounding the ASUO club funding and budget process?
What will you do to relive some of the extreme time commitments required to participate in club funding?
- What would be your plan to tackle low voter turnout in your major?
How would you increase clearness and visibility for elections, especially after the winter special elections confusion?
What would you do to ensure the election board, which ASUO appoints, does not continue to make mistakes that hurt voter engagement?
- How do you plan to include the student body, which often feels out of the loop?
What would you do to change the distance felt between ASUO and the student body?
Tune in to the Candidate Debate
April 2, 6:00–8:00 p.m., EMU Redwood Auditorium
The Candidate Debate is a more structured event where candidates have the opportunity to discuss and debate various issues facing the university. This event is not only open to in-person attendance but also live-streamed, allowing a broader audience to participate. It's an excellent chance for students to witness how candidates articulate their positions, respond to challenges, and interact with one another in a debate format.
Stay Informed
Know the Candidates and Their Platforms
Leading up to the events, take the time to familiarize yourself with the candidate in each slate as well as the representatives running for your major and their platforms. Visit their campaign sites or social media profiles to understand their backgrounds, experiences, and the specific issues they prioritize. Being informed about the candidates allows you to make a more conscious decision when casting your vote.
Encourage Peer Involvement
Spread the Word
Promote awareness about the ASUO elections within your social circles. Encourage your peers to attend the events, ask questions, and actively participate in the democratic process. A more engaged and informed student body contributes to a more representative and effective student government.
