FONDLING INCIDENT SPARKS CONCERN AT UO BARNHART DORM

UPDATE:
We have received an OFFICAL comment and update on last night’s Fondling Incident from the UOPD. It is provided here above our article. Stay safe out there.

Last night a woman reported that as she was walking near Riley Hall, at 11th Ave and Patterson St. about 6:30 p.m., a man grabbed her breast. The man then continued walking north on Patterson Street.

The suspect was described as a white male adult, about 5' 10" tall with a goatee. He was wearing a dark grey hooded sweatshirt, dark grey sweat pants, and a green Boston Celtics jersey under the sweatshirt.

UOPD searched the area for several hours, but did not find him. Anyone who may have witnessed this event or has further information is asked to contact UOPD at 541-346-2919. “

Late Thursday night, a disturbing incident of fondling occurred at the University of Oregon's Barnhart dormitory, prompting campus authorities to issue a warning to students and urging vigilance regarding personal safety. An official email communication was disseminated to the student body, detailing the event and providing a description of the suspect involved.

According to reports from Anonymous Student News reporters present at the scene, the dormitory area saw the presence of two police cars following the incident, highlighting the seriousness of the situation. The university email described the suspect as a 5'10" white male with a goatee, wearing dark sweats and a Celtic jersey. Several reported instances of fondling were attributed to this individual.

In response to the incident, the campus community took to social media platform Yik Yak, where students humorously dubbed the suspect as "The Celtic Jersey Fondler," calling for a collective effort to identify and apprehend the perpetrator. However, amidst the light-hearted banter, the gravity of the situation was not lost, as students expressed concern and emphasized the importance of remaining vigilant.

This incident comes in the wake of other alarming reports of individuals exhibiting inappropriate behavior dubbed “campus creeps." Earlier in the day, a man reportedly broke into the Soto, while another was allegedly found naked in the Bean residence hall. These incidents collectively contribute to a growing sense of unease among students regarding safety on campus.

Anonymous Student News is actively investigating the claims surrounding the fondling incident to the best of our ability. We encourage any students with anonymous tips or information to come forward and assist in our efforts. Additionally, we plan to seek an official statement from the police department tomorrow to provide further clarity on the situation.

As the university community grapples with these concerning events, it is imperative for everyone to prioritize personal safety and remain vigilant. The university's commitment to ensuring a safe and secure campus environment remains unwavering, and efforts to address and prevent such incidents will continue.

SAFETY TIPS FROM UOPD

No action or inaction by a crime survivor makes that person responsible for his or her victimization. Perpetrators are responsible for crimes and their effects. The following suggestions may help reduce the possibility of experiencing such a crime or may improve opportunities to receive prompt assistance.

  • Always be alert when traveling to, from, and around campus – especially at night.

  • When walking at night, try to stay in well-lit areas. The UO provides an online map to help students navigate by the best-lit route around campus. The map also shows the approximately 60 emergency phones (e-phone or call boxes) that are located across campus.

  • When possible, carry a well-charged cell phone with emergency numbers pre-programmed.

  • Download the UO Mobile App for easy access to safety resources, safe ride options, and maps.

  • Duck Rides is the primary nighttime transportation services for students, staff and faculty at the UO. The service is free and peer-to-peer, with students driving students. It runs seven days a week, 6 p.m. to midnight. Call 541-346-7433 or email duckrides@uoregon.edu to make a reservation.
